Colette Lucas

Artist Statement

My botanical motifs are created from a combination of imagination, observation and research. My artwork is heavily inspired by my love of gardening. Childhood favorites like morning glory, milkweed and cosmos are a constant source of inspiration.

I am particularly interested in rhythms created by twining and curvy stems and the structure of plants with seedpods. Invasive plant and pest species both fascinate and aggravate me, so I often incorporate references to these gardening headaches in my artwork. My life as an artist and gardener are closely intertwined.

My artwork usually begins with loose sketches of botanical elements and a seasonally inspired palette. Sketches are then stylized and simplified so images can be cut out by hand. Positive elements are used for direct collage application and negative elements are used as silkscreen masks. My collage papers come from various sources. Hand painted paper helps me to determine a seasonal palette and magazine advertising adds additional elements of texture and interest.
