Catherine A. LaRoche

Artist Statement

I have been intrigued by letterforms and hand lettering since I was a young child. My work includes traditional and contemporary calligraphy, illumination, watercolor, mixed media, and collage. I use bottled and stick inks, dry pigments, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, 23k shell gold, gold leaf, and a variety of papers, vellum, pens, and brushes.

My most recent work, "Letter & Leaf: Calligraphy and Abstract Naturalist Paintings" was on display at Sunflowers Restaurant in Jaffrey, NH, from May 27 - July 1, 2014. The "Letter" pieces ranged from precisely to freely written letters, some further decorated with metallic markers, collaged pieces of my own hand-marbled paper and paste paper, leaves, or other materials. The "Leaf" pieces were co-created with Nature, using leaves, ferns, acrylic inks, watercolor paper, heavy glass, and the sun. I really enjoyed both the process (during which I had an influence, but not complete control), and the resulting shapes, colors, and textures that emerged.

Cathy has also taught calligraphy at the Sharon Arts Center, and Franklin Pierce University. Her work has been exhibited in solo, group, faculty, and juried shows.

She is a member of Masscribes, the Friends of Calligraphy (San Francisco), IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting), and Cyberscribes.
